4. NATURE AND MONUMENTAL CITIES not far from the school

Cáceres is a land of contrasts. Mountains, valleys, meadows and  plateaus alternate harmoniously, creating scenary that is perfectly assembled. It is an authentic mosaic, and enormous natural wealth is produced by this great variety. In our land, there still exist true paradises of nature which stand as the last refuge of emblematic , endangered species like the iberian lynx, the black vulture, and the imperial eagle.

  • LOS BARRUECOS. 10 kms. far from the school. At Malpartida de Cáceres, in the unique spot of Los Barruecos, declared a Natural Monument, there are curious rock outcrops which are a result of erosion dating back millions of years. Tucked among the granite are several ponds and old dams. This spot has one of the largest stork colonies in the province.

  •  LA SIERRA DE SAN PEDRO.15 kms. far from the school. It is situated in the westernmost zone of the central mountains, is made up of small quartzite hills and numerous valleys. Cork oak and holm oak groves cover this great ecological reserve which is home to abundant big game. Iberian wolves, wild boar, genet, marten, lynx, imperial eagles, and a great number of deer can be found here.

  • LOS LLANOS DE CÁCERES.25 kms. far from the school.Los Llanos are cereal-producing pseudosteppes where bustards, cranes, and other birds of the plains live.

  • MONFRAGUE NATURE PARK.90 kms. far from the school. Monfrague holds an authentic plethora of Extremadura nature. The density and the rarity of the species found here make the Park truly representative of Mediterranean flora and fauna. It is located in the centre of the province between the Tajo and the Tietar rivers.

  • CÁCERES.20 kms. far from the school. In rolling, open countries lies Cáceres, the two-thousand-year-old capital and World Heritage Site. It is a city of monuments and of life. The Monument District is one of the purest and best conserved in all of Europe. Enclosed within its Almohads walls are numerous palaces, churches, towers, arches, and mansions that carry us back to the Middle Ages.

  • TRUJILLO.60 kms. far from the school.

  • Trujillo, crowning a small hill upon which sits an Arab castle of the 10th Century, is a renowned cradle of conquistadores. The great monumental value of the town is witnessed to by its title of Centre of Art and History.
